Scout Samellan at St. Mary's High School

Scout Samellan at St.Mary’s High School (SSC) on 16th and 17th March 2019

On 16th March 2019 ten selected scouts of Std.9 had attended the Scouts samellan that was held at St.Mary’s School (SSC) in Mazgaon. The boys were accompanied by their scout master Mr.Anandprakash Sharma. All the boys reached the venue at 4.30 p.m. as the reporting time was 5.15 p.m.

In all scouts from six schools attended the samellan. All the scouts were allotted a place where they had to pitch their tent and make a multipurpose gadget with the help of staves and ropes. We built our tent with the materials provided. It was a great experience for us to build a tent as we were doing this for the first time. We then built a multipurpose rack with ropes on which we could keep our heavy bags, shoes, ropes etc. The knots such as clove hitch and diagonal lashing were used to make our multipurpose rack. Next we were given time to prepare our skits which was to be presented at the campfire session - our topic was ‘A scout is disciplined and protects public property’. This was followed by dinner which we had to carry from home. After dinner we participated in the campfire activities wherein all the schools presented their skit and every skit had an important message. We retired for the night in our tents at about 11.00 p.m. It was a very good experience for the boys of our school to sleep in a tent as this was the first time we were sleeping in one which we had made ourselves.

The next morning we woke up at 6.30 a.m, got dressed in our scout uniform as we had the inspection of our uniform, tent and the multipurpose gadget. The solemn flag hoisting ceremony followed wherein all the schools together formed a horseshoe and sang the scout prayer. We then had our teaching sessions held by a senior Scoutmaster who attended the samellan. We had six sessions that included: knotting session, history of scouts, compass session, first aid session, morse code and estimation. We learnt a number of new things during this session which we can implement in life and also learned more about Mr.Baden Powell the founder of the Scouts. We were then served lunch after which we had our base games and activities which we enjoyed tremendously. Next was the lowering of the flag as we sang the National Anthem. We were each given a frooti by the committee and then everyone departed to their homes by 4.00 p.m. The camp taught us a number of life skills such as how to be independent, how to communicate through signs in an emergency, how to make estimations if one has to cross a river, first aid that needs to be given in various situations etc.

We thank our Scout Master Mr.Anandprakash Sharma for accompanying us to this Scouts Samellan and for his invaluable guidance and help at the various activities that we had to do.
